What has his ethnic identity got to do with his achiement? He toiled and moiled all alone to reach this zenith. Why should others come and attrtibute his success to something else?
Venkaraman, the scientist, was awarded Nobel Prize for Chemistry. He is an IIT JEE failed and so, went to Cambridge to study and research Chemistry. During all these decades, none knew him and talked about him. But when he won Noble Prize, Tamilians wrote bombastically that a Tamilian had won and they were proud of that fact. Annamalai University claimed that he was their old student.
In his speech given at Chennai, he remarked all the above painfully and asked what these facts have got to do with his labour, which was encouraged only abroad?
Same questions arise here.
Will these Tamilains feel proud or talked about a person from Tamilnadu or Tamil origin American incarcerated abroad for some crime? Kovai-born Rajarathnam is serving sentence in USA for insider trading. Can we talk about that fellow? No we are clever to conceal. We would say, no ! his crime has got nothing to do with his enthncity. He did it alone and only he is to blame, not we.
Success has many fathers. Failure is an orphan.
I find shamlessness in such claim to credit that is rightfully due to others.

WOW!!!
You can look at his in different angle.
* If he makes billion dollar per year, he would not give a penny to you and me and so why should I care?
* People have already identified his caste and his caste label is already being used by some people- despite the fact that he does not seem to claim that caste identity yet.
* He grew up in Tamilnadu and Tamil is his mother tongue. So, he is kind of having a similar mentality like us as he grew up in such a settings. It kind of makes u feel that even WE CAN REACH such a high level. It kind of helps to boost our confidence and younger people's confidence to a "higher level"

:) It is not just talents, Sir. You need to be there at the right place at the right time too. Very few get such a chance. Honestly, I dont think I feel inferior to him in ANY WAY! ;)

Good post.
To tell you frankly I felt the same when I read about Sundar Pichai. He is like a little representation of all those who came here for living and eventually settled down here. Through hard work, dedication and passion, he came up in life to achieve such a position at a relatively young age.
And, I like the comment from Bala Sundara Vinayagam. His comment tells the truth. In India, I saw many people who try their best to come up in life to get respect in the society. But they wont be recognized/dont get proper recognition. But the same people once they come out of India, and do their achievement, Indian universities/schools starts claiming that the person is from their alumni. And the same people claim that they feel proud of him.

Well, he can not hide the fact that he went to schools in TN and graduated from IIT and dropped out of PhD program at Stanford. Politicians and schools he went to, are going to use this situation to take advantage. I believe it happens everywhere not just in India! :)
