I have made up my mind on this. So, Dont even try, convince me! Thanks.

Varun,

You are telling half and hiding half. I was there on occassion where he talked about Sanskrit and Tamil.

What he was telling was, Tamil language lost lot opportunities to enhance itself because the Tamil pundits shunned Sanskrit.
While Tamil contains the sonic elements needed to briefly articulate, it lacked phonetic elements to verbalize emotions and also lacked logical constructs for in-depth dialogues.
His anguish was that Tamil lost this great opportunity to evolve using Sanskrit.

And he chose strong words to wake up those stupid Tamil pundits that suppressed Sanskrit.

Also, it is possible to attain mugthi irrespective of your caste. When you take pride in identifying with a language, and simply accept people spreading venom in the name race, what is so bothering about a caste.
In fact caste has forged values on group, and prevent them from bad things.

First of all, he didn't master Sanskrit. He had a scrappy acquaintance with the language. He couldn't write and speak Sanskrit. So, he wasn't the right person to compare and contrast the two languages. Even if he was, the way he expressed his opinion was inappropriate. No one would like to hear that his or her language is inferior to any other language. Like a mother to whom the most ungainly child is the most beautiful child in the world! Can you find fault with such maternal attachment? Will you call it fanatical love? You say, against Tamil pundits. No, it was hurled against all those who hold their mother-tongue dearer to them.

Nevertheless, he could express such opinion in a conference of scholars where languages are discussed (one such meeting was recently organised in Delhi by Sahitya Academy in New Delhi that I attended). Cultured and learned people also have independent and strong opinions. But being cultured, they choose their platforms and ways to say. Indeed in University linguistic department (seminars, Extension lectures and the like) it would be possible to express a variety of differing opinions. He avoided such stages because of his fear that he would be caught red-handed for lack of knowledge in language studies. He was self-taught. He school life ended with at V Std. He picked up everything in life but never learnt anything as a scholar should do. Anybody can pick up anything: the porter at Central Station speaks faster English than a teacher of English language!

So he feared conferences of learned people. (The truth is such conferences won’t invite writers. The Conferences may discuss their writings; but they won’t call any writer to deliver a speech on various merits of languages unless such a writer himself is a scholar like Mu Va. A writer may be invited as a guest to deliver a speech. But never a to participate and discuss in seminars or conferences. Writers make up a motley crowd: robbers, womanisers, drunkards, derelict tramps, mentally deranged, drug additions can be found among them. We honour their writings, not their way of living. A cultured society give them a place to live in and produce. That's all. Therefore, writers should know their places and keep themselves within there: they can perform all gimmicks there. We can enjoy watching them.)

Jeyakanthan thought he could get away with anything, just like EVR, I mean, any manner of talk. While the Brahmins are up in arms against EVR for saying Tamil is a language of barbarians, they, and you too, are up in arm only against the Tamilians who feel unfairly wronged by his obscene condemnation of their mother-tongue. He could have expressed the same opinion from the same platform in a way that is acceptable. Appropriate way can make even your enemies listen, introspect and perhaps come to accept yours. This fellow lacks basic qualification to live in a cultured society. He was fit to live only in a jungle. This is just a matter of language. In social issues, his behaviour was despicable. He is alleged to have called all Srilankan Tamils bastards.

My opinion is: Enjoy reading his novels and short stories and don’t go beyond that. Discuss him only in the context of his literature. But don’t forget to condemn him for being a human being with a bestial mind.

NewWorldOrder guy!

It is dangerous to link personal life of a writer with his books. In my long message, this point has been emphasised. There are no rules in literature of any language to the effect that only the virtuous guys should write; and the vicious keep off. Not at all. I said a motley crowd. Hence, anyone can write. Society welcomes all with open hands. Even a criminal, from Jail, can produce literature: like Jeffrey Archer and a French writer who was jailed for robberies. Our own Charu admits his heavy drinking; and Kushwant Singh said he was a womaniser. Kanndadasan was a confessed womaniser, drunkard and a drug addict. They are so because they feel they are defying socially accepted norms of good behavior. It gives them some sort of Holier than thou attitude, which is indeed essential to produce great literature in many of them. Our Bharatiar was a victim of emotional outbursts, and a drug addict too. His addiction to drugs caused his life. Coleridge's Kubla Khan was abandoned in the middle, not because the poet couldn't know how to finish, but because he overloaded himself with kanja and fell unconscious and lost the MS. The unfinished poem remains one of the dazzling gems of Eng literature today.

If we restrict literature only to the virtuous, then even Sangam poetry itself will have to be thrown into Bay of Bengal because if history is fairly reserarched and writern, we can find, among these poets, many rogue guys.

Therefore, don't link a writer with his social opinions, however outrageous to social modesty they may be. Varun links the two. He isn't alone in this. A lot of us decide the worth of an author on the basis of the proverb: Practise before you Preach. This rule is not applicable to writers. They are a class apart, a kind of mavericks, swimmers against current; for which they suffer gladly. Shelley was rusticated from Oxford University and he exiled himself to Italy and died during the voyage: What for? For his atheistic writings as a student. An American University did the same to Russel for writing the book: Why I am not a Christian? Today Shelley is known as a great poet, Russel a popular philosopher.

The question - Whether Jayakanthan is a good or a bad writer ought to be examined regardless of the fact whether he loved or hated Tamil, whether he called Srilankan Tamils bastards or legitimate children. Read his books with this mindset and evaluate his contribution to Tamil llt. I was shocked by your statement. Varun's blog is misleading you. I talked about Jeyakantan as a social guy, not as a writer at all.

My opinion: He did contribute to modern Tamil literature emphatically. But I like more this fact that he blazed a new trail in Tamil literature. It is for you to explore what that
trail was.

Varun!

I have read the distortion of his statement by his political as well as social enemies. But he made the statement - in legislative assembly or a public meeting, not remember exactly! - only as a sapient advice to his young followers who called him Anna and looked up to him wise for guidance - not to reject all that the rival party leaders speak because there were occasions when, what they said was sound, substantial and sapient.

One can distort anything if one is prejudiced against the speaker for his own reasons. Even Saints and Mahatmas face such attacks posthumously. And, prophets like Jesus and Mohammed were driven out their places by hostile mobs. Hence, Jesus correctly observed: NO PROPHET IS NOT WITHOUT HONOUR SAVE IN HIS OWN COUNTRY. He further rued: The foxes have holes and the birds of the heaven have nests, but the Son of Man does not have a place where He may lay His head. (His counsel to people were distorted before the King. Oh King, he is declaring himself as the King of Jews! Are you the King or he?)

Great people will have to suffer the stones thrown at them by small people. The small don't leave even Saints and Prophets un-stoned.

But such malicious conduct is ok with politicians because it is one of their survival tricks. Politics is the last refuge of scoundrels. But we aren't scoundrels, so we need to be fairr-mined common persons who shouldn''t distort anything to suit our base interests.

Anna is well known for fair treatment of all in personal life. Seshan has recorded in his autobiography how on the very first day of his occupying his chair in CM room after coming to power, all brahmin bureaucrats trembled in their shoes about the possible discrimination from a DMK CM. He called Secretaries of all departments to his room: most of them were Tamil brahmins. Anna spoke to them as CM and that speech, rather counsel, left the skeptical brahmins in amazement at Anna's fair-mindedness. Henceforward, they went to Anna's room happily and during his whole, but alas@ brief tenure as CM, they worked happily.

We should learn from Anna how not to reject a good thing merely because that person has offended us somewhere for other reasons. Hate the sin, not the sinner.

Jeyakantan should be appreciated as a writer who showed a new path in literature. At the same time, there is no doubt that he should be condemned for his non-literary nonsense.

When it is high time said...

My name has been distorted by you, NewWorldOrder. You have even changed my sex.

I said Literary sense and Non-literary nonsense. It is possible with writers. Kannadasan is a supereme example. We don't hate his lyrics because he was a confessed womaniser, drunkard and drug addict. We don't hate Bharatiar's poems because he was a hardened drug addict. There are hundreds of such examples in literatures of all languages. Naipaul''s Hindutva leaning is not acceptable to many people. But he won Nobel prize not for his non-literary Hintuva; but for his early novels, which should be read and enjoyed by all. He is one of the finest living prose stylists in English lit.

I don't want to flog these examples to death. Only remain saying this: If we reject the writings of an author based on personal character, we will have to lose a lot of good literature. A child born to a prostitute is not to be rejected because it is illegitimate. The child and the mother are linked by umbilical cord; and yet, they belong to two different worlds for ever. Is there any irony here? Loving one and hating other: both from the same stock :-) NO! Good literature stands on its own: it recommends itself. No extraneous agency, including the author's good social conduct, is necessary.

With this literary principle, I took and read Karunaiyinaal Alla and Yarukkaaka Azuthaan. Great work. Derived immense literary pleasure. I took thereafter Cinemaavukku pona siththaalu and on finsihing it threw it into fire. It is a book which is an example of how to abuse one's status as an established writer. He abused it brazenly. He used, or rather, abused the poor of Chennai as caricatures in order to mount his agenda: Scurrilous attack on the mass hero MGR. That endeared him to the rival of the hero: Muka. Is it literature? NO! It is trash of the most condemn-able kind in the name of literature.

Accept this principle: you will have good time with books.

My obituary on Jeyakantan: LOVE HIM OR HATE HIM; BUT YOU CAN'T IGNORE READING HIS NOVELS AND SHORT STORIES. MY MODERN TAMIL LITERATURE HAD A FRESH AIR TO BREATH WHEN HE WROTE.

****We don't hate his lyrics because he was a confessed womaniser, drunkard and drug addict. We don't hate Bharatiar's poems because he was a hardened drug addict.****

Self-destruction is not same as arrogance or being "disloyal"!

Self-destruction should not be compared with "lack of loyalty" to his own community. A guy who is disloyal to his own "mother tongue" and "his family" is a CHEAP human being. Unfortunately JK falls in that category.

If you want me to criticize his novels/ short stories, I can do that too. His writings are not flawless either. Yes, he was a great writer. That's why we do not want him to be "disloyal" to the language and the community which awarded him everything he "earned".

Just because he was a great writer, we dont have to overlook his "UGLY interior". Nobody is makin gup stories here. He himself revealed his ugly interior.

Mr Bala sir,
I know you are male, but I purposefully distorted your name . Because I want to teach you a good lesson about the impact of WRITING from your case itself. If I know you are male, and if I write as in other form, it hurts you! right?

Same thing will apply for any body who thinks/knows about Tamil and writes his view in differently.

I am not concerned whether jeya kanthan is drunkard or womanizer, but I am concerned that he was surviving by the grace of Tamil. But he commented Sanskrit is superior to Tamil . It cannot be accepted.

In fact, we are not talking empty pride of Tamil.nit has wealth of literature for greater antiquity than any other languages.

This is what is called as linguistic intolerance.

No it hasn't hurt me. But it will, if only I consider being a female is bad. If someone calls me transgender too, I won't mind. You can call me that. I don't disrespect people for no fault of their own.

I have made it clear that Jeyakantan's statement about Tamil vs Sanskrit will hurt all Tamils, not only language fanatics. At the same time, it will be examined and accepted, if found convincing, if the same statement is made by a scholar from an appropriate forum, who is known for his erudition in both languages. In fact, some learned people who are not Tamils, have told me the same: Tamil lacks sufficient letters to express various shades of feelings as against Sanskrit which has.

All said and done, I won't accept the books of any author derided just because he has made statements which hurt a lot of people. Written literature and spoken words are different for me.

If you don't accept, we may agree to disagree.

You misinterpret everything for your convenience. JK was a "Tamil traitor" and he was disloyal to Tamil and Tamils. Yeah, he was a great writer. So what? You dont have to defend him for any nonsense he was doing just because he knows how to tell "stories"!

Where is the point of linguistic intolerance here? When you get hurt, if I point out, it is my intolerance. What can be called for your behaviour?

NewWorldOrder said...

For her (Taruda), what she says is correct! She cannot accept others opinion. If she cannot accept our opinion, she will mark as racist/chavaunist/intolerant. What is called for this stupid behavior?
