Did Alexander really defeated the Indian king Porus?

British historians used to talk of Alexander as ``the world conqueror'' who ``came and saw and conquered'' every land he had visited. He is still advertised in Indian text-books as the victor in his war with India's Porus (Puru). However, the facts as recorded by Alexander's own Greek historians tell a very different tale. And Marshal Zhukov, the famous Russian commander in World War II, said at the Indian Military Academy, Dehra Dun, a few years back, that India had defeated Alexander.

I do not know what Marshall Zhukov said and in which context.
Greek and Latin historians agree in saying that Alexander did conquer Porus. In fact I was reading this episode in Quintus Curtius last night.
Historians do not tell the same stories according to their sources. Arrian is the most reliable because he used first hand sources: Ptolemy I who was one of Alexander's generals and Aristobulus who was an engineer in Alexander's expedition. Arrian compares the two, often relates what the two said and their discrepancies.
What Alexander did was to fool Porus into thinking he was fleeing. In fact he was just going around and attacking Porus from the rear of his army while Seleucus and his men were in charge of seriously injuring the elephants with their axes (Alexander's orders, not Seleucus' idea). Meanwhile, Alexander had also chosen a part of his army to attack the front of Porus'army.
In addition, the soil was slippery and the Indian archers who had huge arches and huge arrows, did not have a stable and firm grip on the ground to throw their arrows. The elephants turned against their own army. It was a debacle. Alexander won. He was very impressed by Porus'courage and he gave him his kingdom back with more territories than before (so says Quintus Curtius). Alexander did that with all his conquests but there were always Macedonians militaty men to control the king or the satrap of the conquered territory or satrapy.

Alexander has remained undefeated because he used his wits in addition to his powerful army which could move fast, had powerful weapons and siege machines, and was completely devoted to their king, Alexander.
For the past half century for some reasons, people try to make Alexander look ugly, blood thirsty, weak, thinking only about his male lovers, etc... However, they have to admit he was an enduring man, courageous, brave, generous, and above all extremely intelligent.

  • Alexander -did- defeat Porus in the Battle of Hydaspes ...

    But his troops refused to cross the Ganges and attack the states (Magadha and Bengal) beyond ... they had been shaken by the battle with a relatively small power and tired as they already were, did not wish to march further ...

    This is what the Greek historians and probably Marshall Zhukov was referring to ...
    In a way India and Porus signaled the end of Alexander's campaign ...
    (though its really hard to say what would have happened if he did march further)

  • The problem with "Alexander's own Greek historians" is that we don't know what they said. Every contemporary text has been lost. The nearest we have are histories by Arrian, Plutarch, Diodorus Siculus and Quintus Curtius Rufus. It is probable that these people read the original sources, but we can't be absolutely sure.

    All are in agreement that Alexander was victorious over Porus at the Hydaspes.
  • Ya. He defeated porus and captured him alive. After capturing him...., Alexander: "how should i treat you" porus:"as a king" alexander was shocked by his bravery and as a reward he gave back the kingdom to him. This is what i have in my text books.

  • Well, Alexander came to India, beat them in a batlle, then turned around and went back to Greece.
    Alexander could claim victory, but India remained free of Macedonian rule

  • Alexander never lost a battle, but they never really garrisoned troops in india probably do to the distance. but they definitely surrendered to him.
Alexander accepts the surrender of Porus
